Dateline Dehradun: A team of 21 faculty and staff members from UPES made up of twelve women trekkers and nine men under the abled leadership of their Vice Chancellor Dr. Ram Sharma, recently completed the rigorous Gaumukh Tapovan Trek, marking a significant journey of leadership and environmental stewardship. Dr. Sharma, an avid trekker, highlighted the trek’s role in enhancing mental, physical, and emotional resilience, qualities essential for navigating life’s challenges.
As academicians, experiencing such challenges firsthand enriches our understanding of real-world issues, remarked Dr. Sharma. It provides valuable insights into problem statements and inspires us to contribute meaningfully.
The five day trek, renowned for its moderate to difficult levels, took the team through picturesque landscapes from Gangotri through Cheerbasa and Bhoj Basa to Tapovan, offering panoramic views of Bhagirathi Peaks, Gaumukh and Mount Shivling. The sixty kilometer trek included traversing moraines, river crossings and rocky terrains, under the watchful eye of Chain Singh Rawat from Himalayan Hikers.
During their expedition, the team also trekked to Gaumukh, witnessing the pristine glacier firsthand. On their final day at Tapovan, the team organized a yoga session, honouring traditional wisdom and promoting holistic well-being.
Reflecting on their journey, the team emphasized the transformative power of such experiences in fostering personal and collective growth. The trek taught us resilience, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for Uttarakhand’s natural beauty added a team member.
The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek exemplifies UPES’s commitment to experiential learning and holistic development, equipping students with skills beyond the classroom. As the team returns to work, carrying with them not only memories of physical achievement but also a renewed dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainable living.
