For the past three months, people in the Doon have been waking up to a baritone booming over the radio. The new young sensation is enthusiastic and passionate about the town, its culture and its people. RJ Kaavya, is the voice behind Morning no:1 show on Superhits 93.5 Red FM Bajaate Raho which comes on-air between 7 to 11:00 in the morning from Monday-Saturday.
Little does one know, that Kaavya or Kavindra Singh has his roots in the Uttarakhand. Born and brought up in Bageshwar, he chuckles as he says: “My father runs a school in Bageshwar, and imagine his horror when his first born flunked grade 11th! It was the ultimate disgrace for my family. I ended up with my Uncle in Delhi, and there was no turning back!”
During his holidays, while alone at home, he turned to surfing Radio Stations in the hope of finding entertainment. His love for the medium grew. The proverbial penny dropped. Kaavya knew what he wanted to become.
After finishing school, he convinced his family that, “I was fit to be an RJ as I had the gift of the gab!” and landed with his first job in Jodhpur in 2008 as a Radio Jockey. And slowly but surely he learnt the ropes of becoming a perfect RJ!
Two years later, on 9th November 2010 he joined Red FM Kanpur and after three long years here, he moved to Jaipur, Calcutta, Delhi and finally his dream-destination, his ‘ghar-wapsi’ to Dehradun in July this year.
“Dehradun is a pristine market, as far as the radio is concerned! My job here is very much like my first love, I have a unique relationship with the valley and my listeners,” Kaavya tells us.
So what makes a good RJ, I ask? Without batting an eyelid he retorts, “Its easy to be a Radio Jockey but it is difficult to be a good one! A good RJ is on the one who speaks well but one who is a good listener, one who makes a personalized one to one connect with his audience.”
And the-connect is definitely there! Over the last few months Kaavya has become a household name with his Morning No: 1 show on Superhits 93.5 Red FM Bajaate Raho. An instant hit with listeners of all age group, Kaavya is a celebrity in his own right. His composed jingles Chhote chhote gaawn yaha hai and Ghumo chache garmi ya ghumo thand mei, har mausam rangila yaha Uttarakhand mei were appreciated by the Chief Minister himself and his show Ek Pahadi Aisa Bhi won an award at the Dehradun International Film Festival.
He signs off telling me he would like to be a politician if given the right platform, but has no plans of giving up being a Radio Jockey! So stay tuned to know more about your favourite youth icon.
