Swami Rama Himalayan University Jolly Grant and Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL) New Delhi will now collaborate in the field of innovation and technology transfer.

Dateline Dehradun: Swami Rama Himalayan University Jolly Grant and Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL) New Delhi will now collaborate in the field of innovation and technology transfer. An MoU was signed between the two institutions to this effect.

Under the guidance of Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, President of Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), the MoU was signed by Registrar Dr. Mukesh Bijlwan and Dr. Purnima Sharma, Managing Director of BCIL.

On this occasion, SRHU Vice Chancellor Dr. Rajendra Dobhal said that this MoU will accelerate the development of a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship amongst faculty and students. Both parties will work together on technology evaluation, licensing agreements, IP management, and quality assurance measures.

Dr. Dobhal emphasized the university’s commitment to promoting a favorable environment for technology transfer and its commercialization. He mentioned that this collaboration would help in fostering socio-economic development and creating new pathways for research and innovation.

Dr. Purnima Sharma, Managing Director of BCIL, highlighted the importance of strong IP management and public-private partnerships in advancing innovation and economic development. She stated that SRHU, known for its commitment to research excellence and technology development, is sure to play a crucial role in providing the necessary technical expertise and knowledge for the successful transfer of technologies.

Amidst the festivities, a special workshop on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) was conducted, underscoring the commitment to upholding ethical standards and ensuring the integrity of clinical trials.

As part of the global observance of this special day a distinguished workshop on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) was organized by Dr Bindu Dey Chairperson Clinical Trial Committee SRHU and Dr Nikku Yadav Coordinator Clinical Trial Centre SRHU, spotlighting key principles and best practices essential for maintaining the integrity and ethical conduct of clinical research. Led by esteemed speakers Dr. NK Arora, Executive Director Incline Trust International, Sanjay Gupta, M/s Catalyst Clinical Services Pvt. Ltd., Delhi and Prof. DC Dhasmana, Department of Pharmacology SRHU the workshop provided attendees with invaluable insights.

Dr. NK Arora, a leading authority in the field of clinical research, delivered a compelling presentation on the key principles of Good Clinical Practice. Emphasizing the importance of ethical conduct, patient safety, and data integrity, Dr. Arora underscored the fundamental principles that serve as the bedrock of GCP compliance.

The inaugural session commenced with an enlightening discourse on the significance of clinical trials and the paramount importance of patient safety. Led by esteemed speakers Dr. Ashok Kumar Deorari Pincipal Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr. Hemchandra Director Medical Services, Himalayan Hospital the session set the stage for a day of reflection, collaboration, and innovation in the field of clinical research.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Deorari, a renowned expert in neonatology and clinical research, delivered a poignant address on the importance of clinical trials in advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. He underscored the critical role of rigorous scientific inquiry in evaluating new therapies, interventions, and medical technologies, emphasizing the indispensable contribution of clinical trials to evidence-based medicine.

Dr. Hemchandra, a distinguished clinician and patient safety advocate, elucidated the principles and practices essential for safeguarding the well-being of research participants in clinical trials. Drawing from his extensive experience in healthcare quality improvement, Dr. Hemchandra emphasized the ethical imperative of prioritizing patient safety at every stage of the clinical trial process, from protocol development to post-market surveillance.

Sanjay Gupta, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in clinical trial management, shared practical insights into implementing GCP standards in clinical research. Drawing from his wealth of expertise, he elucidated strategies for ensuring protocol adherence, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance throughout the trial lifecycle.

Prof. DC Dhasmana, a distinguished academic and researcher, provided a comprehensive snapshot of Good Clinical Practice, offering attendees a nuanced understanding of its core tenets and application in real-world scenarios. Prof. Dhasmana’s presentation encompassed a wide range of topics, from risk management to informed consent, highlighting the multifaceted nature of GCP compliance.

Dr. Deorari and Dr. Hemchandra candidly addressed the challenges and opportunities facing the clinical research community, including issues related to patient recruitment, data quality, regulatory compliance, and access to innovative therapies. They called for collaborative efforts amongst stakeholders to address these challenges and harness emerging technologies and methodologies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical trials.

In the valedictory session, Dr Rajendra Dobhal, Vice Chancellor Swami Rama Himalayan University, and Prof Vijendra D Chauhan, Director General Academics and Development SRHU awarded the Certificates of appreciation to the Clinicians working hard in conducting clinical trials namely Dr SK Verma, Dr Kunal Gururani, Dr Ankit Batra, Dr Avtiti Bhaveja and Dr Akash Rawat. Dr Dobhal reiterated, “At SRHU, our mission in the realm of clinical trials is clear and resolute: to conduct research that translates scientific discoveries into tangible benefits for patients and communities. We are dedicated to fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence in clinical research, with a steadfast commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards and ensuring the safety and well-being of research participants.“

Dr Bindu Dey said that the workshop featured interactive learning sessions designed to engage participants and foster meaningful discussions. Topics ranged from protocol adherence and regulatory compliance to risk management and quality assurance, empowering attendees with practical knowledge and tools to excel in their roles within the clinical research ecosystem.

Dr Nikku Yadav said that all participants including students of MSc Clinical Research had the opportunity to network with peers, mentors, and industry professionals, facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration. The workshop served as a platform for fostering connections and building relationships across diverse sectors of the clinical research community.

Following each presentation, interactive discussions and Q&A sessions provided participants with the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers, seek clarification on complex topics, and share their own perspectives and experiences. The lively exchange of ideas fostered a dynamic learning environment and enriched the workshop experience for all attendees. Those present included were PG students, Clinicians, and faculty members of HIMS, HSBS and Somaya Research and Health Service delegate. A guest lecture on uncertainty management was organized at Swami Rama Himalayan University, Jolly Grant (SRHU). The lecture discussed how effective management of uncertainty enhances leadership skills.

The guest lecture was in the Adi Kailash Auditorium. The main speaker, AP Parigi, co-founder and director of Radio Mirchi, and director at Bennett and Coleman Company Limited, stated that qualities such as vision, integrity, and decisiveness are essential to becoming a good leader in the business world. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong ethical foundation in leadership and professional management through his personal experiences.

Parigi emphasized that a skilled leader recognizes and motivates individuals to perform better. He stressed the need for empathy and emotional intelligence in effectively leading and managing teams, and fostering a culture of trust and collaboration within organizations. He underlined the role of communication as a crucial element, emphasizing its importance in achieving goals and solving problems, and that communication should be regular at all levels.

Parigi pointed out the significant role of habits in our lives and mentioned that continuous learning determines the success of any institution or individual in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape. He shared lessons learnt from his extensive experiences with leading enterprises like Radio Mirchi and various other businesses. He discussed the challenges faced, strategies adopted, and key moments that shaped his journey as a leader in the media and entertainment sector.

Before the lecture, AP Parigi was honored with a memento and a shawl by Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, President of Swami Rama Himalayan University, and Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Mohit Verma, Principal of Himalayan School of Management Studies, expressed gratitude to everyone. The event saw the attendance of students and faculty members from engineering, management, biosciences, yoga sciences, pharmacy, nursing, and medical colleges.

Dateline Mussoorie: The grand old man of mountain, author Ruskin Bond turns 90 today.

Since morning an unending line of fans, VIPs, friends and family made their way up to Ivy Cottage, Landour to wish their favourite author on his birthday. It was a back-to-back,  packed day for him as he released three titles: Hold on to your dream; The Hill of Enchantment and  How to be Happy by leading publishing houses including Aleph Rupa and HarperCollins, at Cambridge Book Depot, along the Mussoorie’s Mall Road, earlier in the afternoon.

After sunset, the author made his way to Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels The Savoy Mussoorie for a meet & greet and book signing for his fans on the Central Lawn. Talking about his association with the place, the author recalls: ‘It’s always good to be back in the Savoy especially on my 90th birthday. I have so many fond memories of this place. It always feels like I’m coming to the welcoming arms of an old friend. At every step, memories come rushing back.’

Of his first visit to the hotel, he recalls he came here for the first time in the late 1980s, when he had been invited over by the then-owner Anand Jauhar (better known as Nandu to his friends) for dinner in his cottage. Another invitee that evening was Ruskin’s Editor Valerie, who was staying at the hotel along with her parents and had come out here on a business trip from London.

‘Over the years, my friends and I became regular visitors. The Savoy remains an integral part of many of my stories that took shape here!’ he adds.

Mr. Gautam Valli, General Manager, Welcomhotel The Savoy Mussoorie said, ‘We are honoured to host the author on his special 90th birthday whose presence adds to the rich literary heritage of our esteemed establishment. We extend our heartfelt wishes for his continued good health.’

Before the author signs off to join his intimate friends and doting family for dinner Bond says: ‘Try to make this a better world, because at the moment, its very broken and unhappy, you see it all over, and we should in our small way do our best and strive to make it a better, happier and more peaceful place.’

Himalayan Hospital sets world record as it conducts successful brain clipping surgery

Dateline Dehradun: The neurosurgery department physicians at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant have achieved a remarkable feat. The team of doctors has established a new world record by successfully performing clipping surgery on the largest brain aneurysm ever recorded globally. For the first time in the world, a successful operation was performed on a massive 6.3 cm aneurysm.

Senior Neurosurgeon Dr. Brijesh Tiwari from Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant reported that a 17-year-old boy from Dehradun, Ashish, had been suffering from headaches and intermittent vomiting for fifteen days before visiting the OPD. Following various health screenings including an MRI, an unusually large swelling was observed in the front left side of Ashish’s brain.

Suspecting that it was not a normal swelling, the neurosurgery team conducted an angiogram on the young man. The doctors were astonished to find that it was a massive 6.3 cm aneurysm.

Dr. Tiwari explained that placing a clip on the neck of such a large aneurysm was no less challenging as the bleeding during surgery could have been life-threatening. Ashish and his family trusted the neurosurgery team at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant and decided to proceed with the operation.

Under the competent leadership of Dr. Brijesh Tiwari, with the support of Dr. Ranjit Kumar and Dr. Sanjeev Pandey, the team successfully carried out the complex surgery. After the surgery, Ashish is now fully healthy.

Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, President of Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), congratulated the team on this spectacular success. Meanwhile, Dr. Hemchandra Pandey, Director (Health Services) at Himalayan Hospital, noted that the hospital’s neurosurgery department is world-class in brain and spine-related surgeries.

The size of the aneurysm was approximately 6.3 cm
Most aneurysms are less than 2 cm in size. So far, there has been no record published in medical journals of successful clipping surgery on an aneurysm larger than 6 cm. The case performed at Himalayan Hospital involved an aneurysm about 6.3 cm in size, setting a world record.

What is a brain aneurysm?
According to Dr. Brijesh Tiwari, a neurosurgeon at Himalayan Hospital, an aneurysm is a balloon-like swelling that emerges from the wall of a major artery in the brain. The wall of an aneurysm is weaker than that of a normal artery. If the aneurysm bursts, it causes severe bleeding in the brain, which can result in death and other fatal complications. This specific cause is considered the most dangerous among all cases of brain hemorrhage.

The first panel discussion centered around the theme “Developing Vital Skills for Success in a Dynamic Workplace.” The panel comprised esteemed members including Anup Kumar, GM HR at BRIDCUL; Shyamal Chatterji, Head of Operations at Tupperware India Pvt Ltd.; and Roshan Rana, HR Manager at ITC. Dr. Amit Nautyal from HSMS moderated the session, guiding the discussion towards strategies for skill development.

The second panel discussion explored the theme “Fostering Entrepreneurial Mindsets.” The panelists included Sarika Panchi, CEO, Jivisa Wellness; Major Golki Chandola, Founder Pathal Stays; and Suvendu Barai, Founder Bong Twist Kitchenette. Dr. Rajat Praveen Dimri, Associate Professor at HSMS, moderated this session, encouraging dialogue on cultivating entrepreneurial spirit and innovation.

Dateline Dehradun: Students from the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) Jollygrant have registered a noteworthy achievement. A quiz competition was organized by the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) in Lucknow, wherein HIMS Jollygrant’s Rishu Tiwari, Tushar Kumar, and Dhairya Madan won the gold medal, achieving a historic milestone.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Deorari, Principal of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) at Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), congratulated the three victorious students, calling their achievement a matter of pride. Under the guidance of Dr. A.K. Srivastava, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, the students participated in the quiz competition. Dr. Abhay Srivastava (Nodal Officer) stated that the quiz competition was organized by IAPSM at the Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow on World Health Day. The final round included teams from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and HIMS Jollygrant’s Rishu Tiwari, Tushar Kumar, and Dhairya Madan showcased their exceptional knowledge and teamwork, defeating competitors from AIIMS Gorakhpur and three other government medical colleges.

State Nodal Officer Dr. Shaily Vyas mentioned that 42 medical colleges from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand participated in this quiz competition. The HIMS team overcame rigorous challenges from the preliminary stage to the pre-final and final rounds to secure the gold medal.

Dateline Dehradun: There is glad tidings for students focused on pursuing PG and Super Speciality courses in medicine in one of the leading institutions in Uttarakhand. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved three seats each for DM Cardiology and DM Critical Care Medicine at the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) at Swami Rama Himalayan University, Jolly Grant. Additionally, permission has been granted to increase four seats in MD Anesthesiology.

Principal Dr. Ashok Deorari communicated that the NMC team had sought a report related to the facilities available at the college and hospital. Based on the report, NMC has approved three seats each for DM Cardiology and DM Critical Care Medicine in the PG (MD) course. Permission has also been granted to increase four seats in MD Anesthesiology.Dr. He further informed that students can gain admission to these seats only after NEET-PG centralized counseling.

The shortage of experts in Critical Care and Super Speciality healthcare will now be addressed Principal Dr. Ashok Deorari underlined that critical service is essential in any hospital. There is a shortage of specialists in critical and super speciality healthcare across the country. The increase in PG and Super Speciality seats at HIMS might help reduce the shortage of specialist doctors in hospitals after successful completion of respective courses by aspirants.

PG seats in HIMS increased to 127
After approval from the NMC, permission was also granted to increase four seats in MD Anesthesiology at the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences. The total PG seats at HIMS have now increased from 123 to 127, and the Super Speciality course seats have increased from 12 to 18. This is bound to benefit medical students.

HIMS Jolly Grant meets stringent standards
Principal Dr. Ashok Deorari reported that the Medical Assessment and Rating Board had set stringent standards including department-specific clinical materials, compliance reports, availability of blood components, functional essential equipment, number of units, number of beds in the department, and faculty numbers. HIMS met these stringent standards. Subsequently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) granted approval to increase seats and start new courses.

HIMS Jolly Grant has a prestigious history
Dr. Deorari mentioned that the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, established in 1995 with the aim of providing skilled doctors and quality medical education, has the honor of being the first private medical college in North India. It also includes the state’s largest super-speciality postgraduate teaching hospital with 1200 beds.

At the Himalayan College of Nursing and Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant, various programs were organized on the occasion of International Nurses Day. The kindness and professionalism of nurses make the world a better place, it was pointed out. Experts discussed the challenges in nursing services and measures to improve them. Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, President of Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), stated that Nurses Day is a day to honor the contribution of nurses as miracle workers.

The theme for this year’s Nurses Day is ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care.’ This theme has been chosen by ICN for International Nurses Day 2024 in recognition of the fact that healthy humans make a nation prosperous in countless ways, especially economically. Nursing is the bedrock of healthcare, although it is frequently undervalued by society and faced with financial challenges. But today it can be observed that the demand for nurses is huge and they are valued for their service and highly paid world over.

 

Various activities were held at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant throughout the week on the occasion of Nurses Day, including quizzes, dances, speech competitions, and a cake-cutting ceremony.

Dr. Hemchandra Pandey, Director (Hospital Service), honored the chief guest Sister Pushpa Maya Rai with a memento.

Dr. Kathy, a nursing advisor, mentioned that nursing is like a mirror through which people can clearly observe patient love and care.

On this occasion, the Nursing Superintendent Reena Habil and Deputy Nursing Superintendent Jaibunisha administered an oath to all nursing staff for serving humanity. Dr. Ashok Deorari, Dr. Hemchandra Pandey, Sadhana Mishra, and others were present on the occasion. Solomon Thapliyal, Kavita Naudiyal, Mahesh Saklani, Kajol Arora, and others contributed to the success of the event.

At the program held at Himalayan College of Nursing, Principal Dr. Sanchita Pugazandi mentioned that this day is celebrated in memory of Florence Nightingale who had pledged her life to the service of mankind.

On this occasion 10 nurses were honored with the Clinical Excellence Award including Anuranjita Sharma, Deepika Pundir, Vidya Devi, Meenakshi Mamgain, Rajni, Prashant Shival, Ghanshyam Singh, Abdul Kalam, Rachel Shalini.

Coping with stress taught to medical students at HIMS, SRHU

Dateline Dehradun: Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Swami Rama Himalayan University Dehradun has initiated a stress management program for Postgraduates medical students and medical faculty.

The first interactive lecture was organised on 4th May, 2024 with Dr. Priyaranjan Avinash, Prof. & Head of Psychiatry, as speaker, while the second was organised on 13th May 2024.

Dr Avinash started his talk by first defining “Stress” and emphasising that it is rampant and each one of us face it differently based on our ability to handle it. Chronic stress can cause many physical symptoms such as excessive fatigue, palpitation, headache, insomnia, irritability, poor memory and concentration he underlined. He further explained how long term stress in medical education and healthcare can lead to burn out, addiction, depression and suicide amongst health care workers. At the end of his discussion, he enlightened all with easy activities of managing stress that can be incorporated routinely, including:

– Assertiveness
– Breathing exercises
– Maintaining routine
– Sleep hygiene
– Proper diet & exercises
– Social connectedness
– Yoga & Meditation
– Journaling
– Spirituality etc.

Prof. Ashok Deorari, Principal of Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, shared his pearls of wisdom and past experiences. He emphasised upon the role of exercise, regular walking, avoiding addictions and adopting good hobbies. He concluded by saying ‘that a healthy body only, can have a healthy mind’ that means physicians must keep themselves healthy first, to treat their patients effectively.

Prof. Renu Dhasmana, Vice Principal (Administration) of Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, focused on the role of proper diet and adequate rest in students and faculty for dealing with stress. She also conducted an interactive session involving all the faculties and students, and encouraged them to share their suggestions, give feedback and ideas for the same.

The program will in future include small group exercises including breathing exercises and deep relaxation.
