Dateline Dehradun: On the occasion of National Sports Day, a two-day inter-college football competition was organized at Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) in Jolly Grant. The MBBS students of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) secured victory in the boys’ category. The matches for the girls’ category will be held on August 30.

On Thursday, during the inter-college football competition organized at Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) in Jolly Grant to mark National Sports Day, there was tremendous enthusiasm among the students. Teams from various colleges of the university participated in the event. The first match of the tournament was played between the Himalayan School of Science and Technology (HSST) and the Himalayan School of Yoga Sciences (HSYS), where HSST won by 1-0.

The second match was between the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) and the Himalayan School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (HSPS), with HIMS winning decisively by 4-0.

The third match saw a tough competition between the Himalayan School of Management Studies (HSMS) and the Himalayan School of Biosciences (HSBS), where HSMS emerged victorious with a 3-0 score.

The first semi-final was played between the Himalayan College of Nursing (HCN) and the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), where HIMS won by 2-0. The second semi-final was between HSST and HSMS, which ended in a draw, leading to a penalty shootout where HSMS won by 4-1.

In the final clash, both HIMS and HSMS teams displayed impressive performances, but ultimately, HIMS claimed the title with a 1-0 victory. Dr. Vineet Mehrotra informed that the matches for the girls’ category will be held on August 30. The competition was supported by Krishna Uniyal and Praneeta Raj Bamarada.

Awareness can Increase Eye Donation, Hundreds of Lives may well Be Brightened: Dr. Renu Dhasmana

Dateline Dehradun: Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant is running a campaign to raise awareness about eye donation. Under the National Eye Donation Fortnight, various activities are being conducted to make people aware of the importance of eye donation.

Dr. Renu Dhasmana, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant, mentioned that in India, around 6.8 million people are affected by corneal blindness in at least one eye. Out of these, 1 million people are blind in both eyes. Highlighting the significance of eye donation as a service to humanity, Dr. Renu Dhasmana appealed to people to make eye donation a family tradition.

Dr. Sukriti Upadhyay, the in-charge of the Eye Bank at Himalayan Hospital, and senior ophthalmologist Dr. Harsh Bahadur stated that one person can brighten the lives of two visually impaired individuals. On this occasion, optometry students performed a play to inform people coming to the hospital’s OPD about the importance of eye donation and to dispel any related myths.

During this period, Dr. Chhavi Garg, Neelam, Kavita, and Ashish Kumar also motivated people to donate their eyes.

Instructions for Eye Donation: Eyes should be taken within six hours after death. The eye bank team visits the donor’s home, and this is a free service. The eyes of the deceased can only be taken with the consent of the family. Trained personnel collect the eye (cornea) using a sterile process. This does not leave any marks or deformities on the deceased’s face.

Who Can Donate Eyes: Any person of any age with a clear and healthy cornea, including those who wear glasses, suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, or have had cataract surgery.

Instructions for the Deceased’s Family: Turn off fans, and if there is an air conditioner or cooler in the house, keep it on. Place wet cotton with ice over the closed eyes. Raise the head with a pillow to keep the tissue moist. Donated eyes are never bought or sold.

Dateline Dehradun: The Krishna Janmashtami festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), Jolly Grant. During the event, devotional singers Anant Mishra and Arpana Mishra gave mesmerizing performances of various Krishna bhajans.

The Janmashtami festival organized at Swami Rama Himalayan University was celebrated with much fanfare. During the event, students from MBBS, Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Yoga Sciences, and Nursing departments participated in the Krishna Leela, enacting various episodes from Lord Krishna’s childhood to his youth, leaving the audience deeply moved. The event also featured a Flower Holi and a Matki Phod competition. Following this, devotional singers Anant Mishra and Arpana Mishra enchanted everyone with soul-stirring performances of songs like “Yashomati Maiyya Se Bole Nandlala,” “Shri Krishna Govind Hare Murari, He Nath Narayan Vasudev,” “Zara Itna Bata De Kanhaiya,” “Mere Pyare Banke Bihari,” “Tu Sumiran Kar Radhe Radhe,” “Chhota Sa Kanhaiya Dekho,” and “Kanhaiya Re Thoda Sa Pyar De.”

The celebrations concluded late at night with a grand aarti for Lord Krishna’s birth, followed by distribution of prasad.

They also showcased their skills through art and craft activities.

Teachers and parents cheered the children on, and the event began with a ceremonial lighting of lamps. Dr. Prakash Keshaviah, a trustee of the PEN-India Foundation (PIF), highlighted the significance of cultural events in nurturing talent and connecting children with their heritage.

At the end of the program, PIF founder Anoop Rawat and co-founder Santosh Budakoti awarded certificates to the children. Honored students included Vedika, Trishika, Arnav Chauhan, Abhiraj Rana, Shivansh Chaudhary, and others. Dateline Dehradun: The Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) Jolly Grant, in association with the Himalayan Hospital, organized a health camp at GGIC Dehradun. During this event, students were informed about menstrual hygiene and breast cancer.

The Department of Community Medicine at HIMS Jolly Grant, in collaboration with the Ramini Social Organization, organized the health camp at GGIC, located on Rajpur Road in Dehradun. Doctors conducted comprehensive health check-ups for the students, distributed medications, and provided them with sanitary pads. Under the guidance of Dr. Ashok Kumar Srivastava and Dr. Jayanti Semwal, a session on menstrual hygiene and breast cancer was held. Dr. Shaily Vyas and Dr. Neha Sharma explained the health impacts of poor menstrual hygiene, including infections and other health risks. They emphasized the importance of using clean and safe menstrual products and proper disposal methods. They also provided training on the use of sanitary pads and cloth pads and how to maintain menstrual hygiene.

An informative book manual on menstrual hygiene, covering the menstrual cycle and the changes occurring during adolescence, was distributed to the young women.

Members of the Youth Council for Breast Health SRHU Chapter, Bhumi Pathak and Gauri Bhatia, educated the students about the basics of breast cancer, its risks, symptoms, warning signs, and methods for breast examination. Dr. Sanchi Goyal, Dr. Riya Jain, Dr. Ravisha Garg, Dr. Swati Bisht, Rita Bhatt, Hariom Prasad, Ayush Chandola, Vandana Srivastava, and Shivani Tiwari contributed to the successful conduct of the health camp.

Dateline Dehradun: National Space Day was celebrated at Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) Jolly Grant, in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Chapter of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), Dehradun. In the poster competition held during the event, Mahi secured the first position, while Kumkum, Vandana, and Sandhta secured the first position in the rangoli competition.

On Friday, a rangoli and poster competition was organized at the Himalayan School of Biosciences on the theme of “Chuna: India’s Space Saga.” In the poster competition, Mahi secured the first place, while Srishti, Khushboo, Vaibhavi secured second place, and Aanchal secured third place. In the rangoli competition, Kumkum, Vandana, and Sandhta secured first place while Ritu, Rinki, and Sanjana secured second place, and Varsha, Kiranjot, Rakshita, and Shagun secured third place. The winners were honored with cash prizes and certificates by SRHU’s Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rajendra Dobhal.

While addressing the students, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rajendra Dobal mentioned that National Space Day is being celebrated for the first time on 23 August 2024. This day is dedicated to the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. On this day, ISRO made history by achieving soft landing on the southern pole of the Moon, making all Indians proud. Celebrating National Space Day reflects India’s progress in space research. The success of Chandrayaan-3 has placed India at the forefront of global space competition. India achieved this milestone through the dedication and hard work of ISRO’s scientists and engineers. India is now consistently pushing the boundaries of human knowledge and creativity in space technology on a global scale.

The Department of Medical Education Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences Jollygrant, organized a "Healthcare simulation Training of Trainers Workshop"

Dateline Dehradun: The Department of Medical Education Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences Jollygrant, organized a “Healthcare simulation Training of Trainers Workshop” on 16th & 17th August, 2024 in its Skills & Simulation Center of Excellence.

The workshop was Inaugurated by Dr. Vijendra D. Chauhan, Director General (Academics), Dr. Ashok K Deorari, Principal Himalayan College of Medical Sciences and Dr. Renu Dhasmana, Vice Principal, HIMS.

After formal introduction of Participants & Faculty, Dr. Sanober Wasim explained the agenda and objectives of the workshop.

Dr. Ashok K Deorari explained the importance of Simulation in Medical Education. Dr. Rashmi Ramachandran, from AIIMS, New Delhi briefed about components of Simulation Session. Dr. Anu Sachdeva from AIIMS, New Delhi provided introduction to zones and types of simulation and Dr. Shalini Rao from AIIMS, Rishikesh explained about Application of adult learning principles in simulated environment. Dr. Sanober Wasim gave briefing about how we can teach skills using simulations, Dr. Farhanul Huda explained how we can get realism in simulation, Dr. Rashmi Ramachandran explained Teaching crisis management using simulation, Dr. Rakesh Kumar give briefing about In situ simulation and Dr. Rajesh Kumar Sharma explained Systems check using simulation.

Post lunch different workstations of simulation were setup, the first station being how to use manikins and task trainers for teaching simple and complex skills by Dr. Smriti Arora and Dr. Sanober. Second station related to Moulage techniques to improve fidelity by Dr. Shalini Rao and Dr. Farhanul Huda. Third station was Hi-Fidelity simulator- Demo of a scenario by Dr. Anu Sachdeva and the last station showed using apps and innovative techniques to improve fidelity by Dr. Rakesh Kumar and Dr. Rajesh Sharma.

On day 2 Dr. Rashmi Ramachandran gave lecture on Beyond Simulation: The Power of Debriefing in Medical Education. Dr. Farhanul Huda discussed about Demo of types of Debriefing. Then 4 simulation sessions (breakout room) were setup where moderators let participants perform debriefing.

Also Dr. Rakesh Kumar discussed about Difficult Debriefing situations, Dr. Farhanul Huda gave Simulation based Assessment (SBA), Dr. Rajesh Sharma unravelled Introduction to HIMS simulators and equipment and Dr. A K. Deorari thanked the participants for participating in this workshop, and wished and motivated them to perform well in their upcoming teaching in simulation.

Human fetus found in 7 month baby’s stomach given new lease of life

Team of doctors who operated on the seven-month-old baby who had a fetus inside it

Dateline Dehradun: Rinku (name changed) was only seven months old when his mother noticed his growing stomach. Initially, she ignored it, but as the stomach continued to enlarge, she became concerned. Despite consulting several doctors, Rinku did not find relief.

Rinku’s mother and family approached Dr. Santosh Singh, a senior Paediatric Surgeon at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant. In Rinku’s initial examination, Dr. Singh suspected an abnormal mass in the stomach. An X-ray revealed that a human fetus was developing inside Rinku’s stomach.

Dr. Santosh Singh explained that this condition is medically termed “Fetus-in-Fetu” (Fetus inside a Fetus). After informing Rinku’s parents, the hospital’s surgical team meticulously planned the operation.

Dr. Santosh Singh shared that last week, Rinku underwent successful surgery, and the partially developed human fetus was successfully removed from his stomach. Four days after the operation, Rinku, now fully healthy, was discharged.  T

he operation was made successful with the cooperation of Dr. Ayesha, Dr. Harish, Dr. Vaishnavi, Geeta, and Rajni.

What is Fetus-in-Fetu?
Dr. Santosh Singh, a paediatric surgeon at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant, explained that “Fetus-in-Fetu” is an extremely rare phenomenon in human fetal development. For unknown reasons, one fetus begins to develop inside another, much like a parasite. This condition can be detected via ultrasound during the mother’s pregnancy, though in most cases, it is discovered after birth.

Occurs in One out of 500,000 Pregnancies
Dr. Santosh Kumar stated that cases like “Fetus-in-Fetu” can occur in one out of over 500,000 pregnancies. Typically, these cases are noticed when a baby’s stomach enlarges abnormally between one to two years of age. While the condition generally does not pose a life threat to the baby, it can lead to other serious health issues. The only treatment for this condition is surgery, which should be performed as soon as possible. In experienced hands, the surgery is safe and successful.

Dateline Dehradun: In protest against the incident of rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata, students of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Jolly Grant, and the Himalayan College of Nursing, along with doctors from the Himalayan Hospital, jointly organized a rally.

On Saturday, at 10 AM, thousands of medical, paramedical, and nursing students, along with doctors and faculty, gathered near the Shaurya Wall in the campus of Swami Rama Himalayan University, Jolly Grant. The doctors and medical students held a rally demanding justice for the victim. Carrying placards and raising slogans, they marched in protest from the campus to Durga Chowk, Bhaniyawala.

During the protest, the doctors and students demanded the creation of strict laws to prevent such incidents from recurring and urged for swift justice for the victim’s family. They expressed concern that daughters today feel unsafe and called for the government to take immediate action in this direction. In the same context, a candle march was also held at 6:30 PM.

During the event, students gave heartfelt performances on patriotic songs. Addressing the gathering afterwards, Dr. Vijay Dhasmana said that freedom is not just about breathing in the open air. Freedom is the realization of our duty towards our fellow citizens and nation, and it is our responsibility to preserve the freedom obtained through the sacrifices of our martyrs and freedom fighters.

In line with this, a large-scale tree plantation drive was launched in the university premises under the leadership of Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, named ‘A Tree in the Name of Mother.’ At the end of the ceremony, sweets were distributed.
