Dateline Mussoorie: It was a decade ago, in the picturesque town of Landour, photographer, naturepreneur – Vivek Binepal embarked on a journey that would change not only his life but also those whom he came across. A seasoned marketing and communications professional Vivek decided to follow his heart and explore sustainable business ideas for remote regions in the Himalayas.
Originally intending to stay in Landour, Mussoorie for just a few months, Vivek fell in love with the community and the breathtaking beauty that surrounded him, evolving his short stay into a lifelong commitment. During his initial years, Vivek had the opportunity to collaborate with Woodstock School and the Hanifl Centre, which exposed him to new perspectives, deepened his connection with the mountains and understanding of its hidden treasures. Immersing himself in the local culture, he engaged in numerous meaningful activities, working closely with local communities, villages, and the governing bodies on issues related to social welfare, fair trade practices, and responsible tourism. During this time, Vivek’s passion for organic farming and handmade products grew stronger.
In 2014, Vivek founded Green Life. This venture started as an exhibition, showcasing organic farmers and local artisans across major cities. However, it quickly evolved into something more significant. In 2015, Green Life became a registered company headquartered in Landour, Mussoorie. With his extensive network and deep-rooted relationship with local farmers and shop owners, Vivek began sourcing and supplying products like organic farm-fresh produce, local delicacies, and handcrafted items to Mussoorie and neighbouring towns like Rishikesh and Dehradun. In 2018, Vivek took a leap forward and launched the Green Life website, where his family, friends, and a handful of customers could conveniently order these local treasures from the comfort of their homes. Despite dedicating over nine months to writing, designing, and other creative tasks, the launch coincided with the outbreak of the Covid pandemic.
Amid the chaos and uncertainty, Green Life found its purpose. The team collaborated with the Uttarakhand Organic Board to facilitate a direct connect between local farmers and customers across India. Employing local staff members, with the help of a dedicated team, including Anita Binepal, Shivranjani Singh, and Vivek himself, the website became a lifeline, connecting hundreds, if not thousands, of customers with the natural goodness of Uttarakhand.
Nine-years down the line, Green Life has been committed to promoting local, natural, handmade, and organic products. In collaboration with the Landour Cantonment Board, Green Life organises the renowned “Landour Mela,” a one-of-a-kind event that celebrates the region’s rich heritage and brings together local artisans and farmers. This unique exhibition serves as a platform dedicated to promoting local businesses, Farming NGOs and women entrepreneurs hailing from the picturesque and secluded villages nestled in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand.
Vivek adds, “Not just a business, Green Life also carries a sense of purpose. At Green Life, we view ourselves as your partners on your path to a healthier, happier, and more natural lifestyle.” With over 200 products ranging from groceries, beverages, and body care to clothing and accessories, Green Life delivers the goodness of the Himalayas right to the doorsteps of its customers across India.
The story of Green Life is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the beauty of living harmoniously with nature. Through their endeavours, Vivek and his team continue to uplift local communities, preserve traditional practices, and protect the mesmerising Himalayan landscape for generations to come.
